3rd Base Olean, NY
December 23rd, 2005
Our winter holiday show at 3rd Base in Olean has become a wonderful tradition. Olean has always been so receptive and supportive to Navar. It gets better every time. Special thanks to Sparky and the crew at “The Base” as well as the gang from Sam Goody for making the evening special. Burning Daylight warmed up the crowd with a great set (as always) and fabulous new drummer, Jesse Sprinkle.
For those of you who weren’t able to make it, I hope you all had a wonderful holiday. We had a special guest play during our second set. John Mast is a friend of ours and a super-talented guitarist. It was a blast playing together. He will be playing with us again in Ithaca this week.
Here’s the set list. comment on the show! We often get asked “who’s song is that?” when we play covers…so I included the artists.
Set 1:
Anything (Buckcherry) Restless Restless Rock Bottom NO is Sinking (Tragically Hip) Keep It To Yourself She Drives Me Crazy (FYC) I Wanna Be Sedated (The Ramones) Gouge Away (Pixies) Please God Change Little Things (Bush) Everything’s The Same I Believe in Miracles (Ramones)

Last night was one of my favorite shows that we have played. It happens sometimes, usually after a bad show (or canceled) when we get reminded of why we do what we do. It's nothing I can explain. It's a vibe and an energy that was coming from our friends, old and new, among us last night. It was special. I can't thank you enough.

So our show at Gino's in Portland ME was moved to next weekend...and our magical manager Adam was able to fill the date with a show in Stamford CT. We played at a place called the Crowe Bar. They took good care of us, fed us and were kind enough to provide some tasty beverages. We played a full night and I can't even begin to remember the set list...because we just kind of winged that. Looks like we might be heading back there in October...I hope we do!

Well our first date of the tour was as to be expected...lackluster :) We played at Cat at KC's Tap in Pawtucket, Rhode Island with a band called Forfeit playing before us. We played a heavier set in hopes that we wouldn't get beat up. Well it's almost 3am and Benny and I are on our way back home from the show in Endicott. I'm so beat right now..but it was a fun show. The crew at the Downtown QB is great and I truly look forward to our next show there.
At one point before we started playing I looked over and saw Ben completely surrounded by women...I guess that becomes old hat when you look just like Russell Crowe in Master and Commander. I wonder if Greg "The Hammer" Valentine had the same luck...

RBF
Getting people's attention-- that's always been the most difficult task in stimulating Navar's growth. Last week we played two shows where we were handed an audience. We are very grateful for these opportunities and best of all-- we rocked them!
We traveled to Allentown, PA on Wednesday for a show at the Crocodile Rock with Reel Big Fish and The Poptart Monkeys. We traveled in the same vehicle which always makes for great video and laughs. Skippy and Tim tend to act like arch nemeses on these trips, trading stabs. We entered the Rock through a pseudo cave and decided that it would be a good location for a few pictures.
There are not many better feelings than the moment the lights go down and we're back stage, ready to go on in front of a large crowd. The place was packed and anxious to be entertained, so screams erupted as our shadows came on stage to play. Chills!
Setlist
Coming For You Everywhere With Me Unphased Mojave Shake Please God Change Touch of Class I believe in Miracles Everything's The Same
We were nervous about the skeptics, the ska fans that might not tolerate less than ska but the response was warm and accepting. We were reminded that everyone likes free stuff and everyone likes to rock. We met many cool people in Allentown, as well as The Poptart Monkeys and Reel Big Fish who both owned the stage. A sweaty night of rock and roll was had by all.
After another night of snuggling together in a motel room, we were on our way back to Olean (our home base) to play another show with RBF. It was the beginning of Spring Weekend at St. Bonaventure University and this was the big concert of the Semester. Adam and Tim are both alumnus, so this was a huge night for the band. The show was in the Reilly Center which is the basketball arena, and the stage and lights were like nothing we had ever played on.
We played another great set, and even had some friends up on stage to help. Jay Michael was doing his Mojave Shake and Pam and Kathleen added some attractive clapping to Touch of Class. It was so cool to be on stage, and amongst friends.
After the show, some of the guys from RBF came with us to AJ's, a local pub in Olean for laughs and billiards.
Thanks to all of our fans for you support these past three years. we love you! And to our new friends, welcome…we love you too. We realized during these two days that we are ready for this life.

We just got a few new pics from the last 3rd base show and I wanted to post 'em up here. Thanks to my loving mother for taking them. Anyone in a band...never discourage your mother from going to a show(Unless she also plays the spoons)!
Yes, we have a spoon man show up to our show and give us an impromptu jam session. You never know what's going to happen and a NAVAR show.

3RD Base Olean, NY
Olean opened her welcome arms once again as we celebrated another night of original rock music. Great crowd! Sparky and the gang served the crowd well, Mike Garrison produced a beautiful sound for the room (as usual), and we met some new friends-- release.
Nick, formerly the drummer for famous blue raincoat introduced us to his new band "release.". I was very impressed with their sounds and attitudes. These dudes are for real. I only wish more of you could've experienced this rock and roll gift. One of these days the DJs will die. Saturday, Kyle, Gregg, Mike, and Nick came to Barlinyakmont to record some songs with Pat. (don't worry about our album Pat) ha! I think the results are fabulous.
check them out at: www.release-ct.com
We had a spoon player in the audience so we did the right thing and gave him a mic. There were so many beautiful people in attendance Fri night. thank you all!
Special thanks to Adam Jester for yet another successful night and the team from Sam Goody. Parker and crew, you people rock!

Alfred U
I had been deathly sick all week. Between the sickness and the relentless annoying process of being together recording, there was only one remedy...Alfred U and The Badgemen. The Badgemen were great, they played a wonderful set and I look forward to future shows together. Area bands that are both good and fun to be around are getting harder and harder to find. On second thought, that could be because we wear on folks till they hate us. Special thanks as always to Justin Case of WKPQ and all of our supportive fans in the area that patiently waited for our return and welcomed us with open arms. Great Dancing! Thanks AU for giving us this opportunity and wow--what a cool place to play!

Shinglehouse Road...House
Another new place to play! When we walked in it was very cliche. The jukebox came to a screeching halt and all necks swiveled in violent harmony to look at the weird dudes that had just tarnished their air. But we continued and with a little luck, NASCAR came back on the big screen and we were saved. Ha! Seriously, I know that some of the nice folks really wanted some freebird and You shook me all night long, but they'll stubbornly agree that we won their hearts and minds with Navar. It was the most fun I have had at a show in a long time. After the show, Tim witnessed a man pushing his girlfriend in the parking lot. Where was Patrick Swayze when we needed him? I can't wait to go back!

The Continental
What a cool place, The Continental, in Buffalo! This was our first time playing at the venue, and I was very impressed with the room and the sound. We had a terrible draw though. Maybe next time we will play with bands that don't wear gas masks and play in front of a mock accident crime scene. He was excellent by the way. We should be so animated.

Mardi Gras!
D’Arci McGee’s was a nice central location for the Fat Tuesday celebration in Buffalo. They make a great quesadilla. I exposed my breasts once, but I didn't see any in return... that's okay... I see plenty in my personal life at home... on my computer...

Geneseo
You're right as rain with the OPP comment... I don't know what I was thinking when I wrote it.
As an alumni (alumnus maybe?) of SUNY Geneseo, I knew that since I attended that school for four glorious years, that the fans would flock to our show in Sturges Auditorium. Maybe I should've spent less time hitting the books, and more time in the social scene. I didn't play the first song because I had a broken instrument cable and the settings on my new effects board caused massive feedback. I got everything fixed in time to start a beautiful rendition of Deadly Mistake. I guess everyone was used to hearing DM as our last song because by the time it was over, the auditorium was empty. I figured they left early to beat the traffic. Ah well... live and learn... live and learn. On a brighter note, staying up all hours carrying equipment in the bitter cold has got to be good for bronchitis right?

Just when you thought you were somebody...
Disclaimer: Burning Daylight is a great band. They have loyal and joyous fans. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to play with them and look forward to each show that we share. With that said, we digress, deeper and deeper.
If anyone out there reads these posts and secretly follows Navar's progress because they secretly loathe us and celebrate our failures, you are going to like this.
A few weeks ago, our promotional team had something big in the works. We were working with the American Red Cross and the student organizations in order to make this a large scale benefit for the Tsunami relief effort. In the end it was one dude at the last minute who said, "I'm not comfortable with a show of this size." Posters were designed, made, and the show was being advertised on the radio and the web. He then followed with, "don't forget, Navar is under contract to play." Ahrgh!!!
So we loaded gear up two flights of stairs into an auditorium/lecture hall and played a set for nobody. Not one person was listening that was not under some level of obligation to do so. Seriously, nobody.
It was good exercise. And J&J, the twin Thomas towers that make up our crew were as loyal and attentive as always. And we discovered that there is nothing they can't do. Thanks boys!
Love, hawk
p.s.. we suck............time to buckle down and funnel some of this disdain through the spirit of the album we will record beginning tonight

OP show
Skippy, I think it's "yeah, you know me," not "yeah, you and me."
As for the show, I think Tim said it best when he stated after the show, "I can't think of a better way to spend a Friday night." It was very cold...colder than my heart, colder than my bathroom floor. Ahh.
After the show we got slices down the street where annoying dudes were obnoxiously quoting lines from movies that we love. We hated them for that. Also, i think the dish-rag I asked for to wipe off a table was dirtier than the table. It's all uphill from here.

the OP
I'm down with OPP... yeah you and me... and so on and so forth. Anyway, it was one of the coldest days of the year thus far, but we played the show and the bonna kids seemed to enjoy it. My bronchitus medication froze in the car... I had to thaw it out between my butt cheeks. Hey, it worked... I'm just glad my butt cheeks didn't freeze. Things like this shouldn't be written anywhere -- much less a tour diary. Ah well.

yep... busy weekend indeed...
Well crap. I just wrote up a nice little entry in this tour diary and accidentally browsed away from the page -- leaving the blog somewhere in cyberspace.
Anyway, I talked about the Third Base show... good wings... good times... good friends. I also mentioned that I wore a bright red knit hat with the famous playboy bunny symbol embossed in white -- along with my studded sunglasses (I must have looked spectacular). But those sunglasses are no more. As they slipped off my face, I flung them aside... breaking them... breaking hopes... breaking dreams. Tis a sad day.
The mall was bizarre. The perplexed looks on peoples faces as I watched them go up the escalator were priceless. I'll have to remember to bring a camera with me on stage next time.

Olean is Home
It's shows like the one Friday night at 3rd Base in Olean that make all of this worth while. Refreshed! Great sound, great people. Thank you! I signed three arms this night, one lovely young lady...and two dudes from the road-crew (but we won't worry about them). Clearly this is a sign of progress and a new standard has been set for all future Olean shows.
Saturday we played in a mall. Tim played the bongos. It was a nice opportunity to get some last minute shopping done. I only wish we had more samplers to give out. I'm sure many people enjoyed the music and left not knowing who the hell we were.

Busy Weekend....
Well if the other guys aren't going to crack the seal on this baby, then I'll do the honors.
We have a very busy weekend ahead of us. Finally....NAVAR....has come back to OLEAN! This Friday, the 17th, is our annual "Week Before Christmas" show at 3rd Base.
Then on Saturday, we head out to the Galleria Mall for a kickass acoustic set to help promote the release of the Music Is Art '04 cd. Every summer Robby Takac (bassist of the Goo Goo Dolls) puts on the Music Is Art Festival, which showcases bands from all over Western NY. We rocked out a killer set, and as a result, this year the CD set that chronicles this festival features the one and only NAVAR! Head over to http://www.musicisart.org/ for more details.
More importantly, stay tuned to this Tour Diary for all the behind the scenes info on shows! (Even if it has to come from ME!)
Your loving manager, Adam
